Choosing my genre

I feel as if I am ready to chose a specific genre for my marketing campaign now that I have completed general research into the design and layout conventions of posters, magazine covers and teaser trailers.

I have narrowed my choice of genre down to 3: Comedy, Horror and Melodrama/Romantic Drama. I am going to conduct some brief research into the conventions of each genre before deciding which one to choose. I hope that finding out more about typical character types, themes, story lines, and conventions of film form (such as music and camera work) will help me choose which genre to do.

Comedy

Horror

Melodrama

Analysing Genre in Posters

Now that I have analysed posters from different genres and found a list of layout conventions that appear across all of them, I am going to look at posters from the genre my film will belong to and make a note of the ways that genre is reflected on the posters.

The films I am going to look at are The Notebook, Far From Heaven, Safe Haven, The Best of Me, Dear John and My Sister's Keeper.

Poster Conventions - Introduction

For my first research task I am going to look at posters from a variety of genres in terms of conventions of design and layout that they all share, so that I can use as many of these conventions in my posters when I make it.

I have chosen 'Scream 4' from the Horror genre, 'Miss Meadows' from the Drama genre, 'Rumour Has It' from the Romantic Comedy genre, 'Taken' from the Thriller genre and 'Lawless' from the Crime genre.

A2 Advanced Production - Brief

For my A2 coursework, I will be making a teaser trailer, a poster, and a magazine cover, all of which will be promoting my imaginary film.

I have not decided on the genre of my film yet, so I will start my research by looking at general conventions of teaser trailers, posters and magazine front covers to find out more about the design and layout features, regardless of genre. I will post all of my research and planning on this blog.
